Summary of 3 weekends of activities in Rumbling Bald. Over the past years, I had heard tales of big cave and crack hidden around the Rumbling Bald area. After many walks, hikes up and down and across hollers, I was finally lucky enough to turn a corner and stumble upon the entrance to the “mines of mora”.

Since all of our planned out of country excursions were now canceled due to the pandemic issues of 2020, we pointed our sights to the use of the Graham Van. A roadtrek of 2 weeks through Utah, Arizona, and Colorado (as well as the midwest) would have to do. We would leave from PA, and drive westward and see what we could accomplish.

First weekend in August, we bravely the open highway to head to Norfolk, VA to attending Eric and Kate’s small beach side wedding. Charlotte to VA Beach is a easy 5.5 hr drive through the low land Piedmont, peanut fields, cotton farms, and southern pipes.

During this weekend, I would tagged along with Tim and Nora for a new kayaker trip. This end up being a the best way to beat the heat and really ramp-up my nervousness with kayaking. In the heat of summer we got a adventure with a little bit of a national park feel. There is a little state park tuck up in the Appalachians between Kentucky and Virginia called the Breaks Interstate Park. It calls itself the grand canyon of the south.

High up on the a ridge line and deep within the southwest Virginia Appalachia mountains, a hidden group of sandstone slot canyons that awaited some wandering. In the heart the of the July with max humidity in the air, we took the long hike to the top of the ridge.
