I was in need of an exploration weekend. So Alexis and I took off for Linville in search of a rarely trekked trail on the western side of the Linville Gorge. The weather outlook that weekend was bleak and most people regulated themselves to stay indoors, but not us. We had our trusty rain-shells and were not afraid to get lost or wet in the wilderness. The goal for the trip was to locate “Sunshine Point” on a not so sunshiny day.

With the heat of summer baring down on the land, the closest cool option was to set off and explore the northside of Moore’s Wall. Alexis had never been to Moore’s, which put her in company with the majority of climbers around NC. There is some type of mystique that turns people off, but it is just good trad climbing fun.
This is combination of two weekends worth of random events and trips. Lets start off with the most important one, the stainless steel barrel hunt!
Ah yes, all of my previous commitments and trips were finally completed. I was finally able to reserve a weekend for me and some rocks. Being in the heart of summer, I had to be weary of the hordes at Summersville Lake and wondered what other climbing holes would be cool enough spend the day at.
Quick decisions and fast-driving were the name of the game to make the call to get to PA for Crabtree Fireworks. After throwing the cat in the back of the car Friday afternoon, we made it to PA around midnight. We drove by the Roadhouse, and thought we saw some recognizable vehicles, but I did not stop. Sadly, I missed out on a heavy night of whiskey drinking.
The weekend started off with some fun boating on Lake Wylie with Tim and Nora. We all were very well hydrated after a full day of drinking radlers, somewhat dodging thunderstorms, wake surfing, and my failed attempts at sky skiing. During our dinner at a Fishing Club, Tim and I worked out a timeframe to go to Ship Rock on Sunday.
When presented with the opportunity to go to on vacation – always take it, if you can. So when we got notified of my cousins upcoming wedding in the Dominican Republic (República Dominicana), we scrounged up some money and time and made our reservations. It not very often that one gets to hang out with so much family, let alone in a fun foreign environment. June came quickly and we hopped on a direct flight out of Charlotte to the DR.
Many would say June is not the best time to send at the New River and they are right. There aren’t crisp crimp, flypaper sloppers, or Velcro mono dishes. Sunday was a spotty forecast and I still wanted to get out and do something. The rain gods has descended on the entire eastcoast and cast the probability of rain everywhere. Although I had a late start in the morning, I worked out a plan with a series of text messages with John Lee. We left Charlotte around 11am to arrive at Moore’s during prime popup-storm time.
