Georgetown, Pawleys Island, and Waccamaw Refuge

Georgetown

It was time for a beach weekend trip to Georgetown South Carolina.   We had never visited this area of South Carolina, and had not heard too much of the area.   There were no highways to connect Charlotte to the town of Georgetown, so we got to an interesting tour of this part of the country.

The 2 lane road provide good sights of old towns that seemed to be stuck in time in the 1950’s. We passed many fields of what we could only guess to be peanuts.   Eventually we made into the Georgetown area and continued onto the beach of Pawley’s Island.   Using Yelp, I picked something that had great reviews, but forgot to limit my $ filter. So we ended up dining at the Chive Blossom Cafe.  We were under-dressed, but only stayed for a delicious she-crab soup and appetizer. From here, we snuck over across the bridge and located public parking on the island for some swimming.

My romping around the beach was limited, because of the previous week’s severe coffee burn.  I could only sit back and enjoy the sunrays while watching everyone else splash and play around the beach’s edge.  This was sad, however it allowed me to view something I never thought I would get to view in my life. While sitting and pondering the sea, I noticed a large bait ball of fish working its way down the surf.  Birds were circling and consistently diving into water.  Little fish would also be breaking out against the surf of the water, mostly likely for being chased by much large fish. This baitball took a good 10 mins to move slowly down until it was directly in-front of me.   Then all of a sudden while the beach people were splashing and playing, I saw a massive 6 ft shark breach 3ft out of the water. I sat with my mouth agape and looked around to see if anyone else had noticed. Nope. Everyone just continued to beach it up in the water.

With our fill of sun, we went back inland and checked into the scuzzie hotel in Georgetown. Nothing fancy, but it wasn’t what we researched or booked online.  Anyways, we cleaned up and headed  to downtown Georgetown.  The small old town feel was pretty awesome.  There was a cool little harbor walk and neat business down in the small main street boulevard. We had a nice dinner in the River Room.  We walked the town taking in the sights of sunset on a old steel mill. Also, we drank some brews at the Castaway’s bar and grill watched a whole pack of fresh water gar circle the pier.

The next day we headed back into the Pawley’s island to ride some airboats.  We took cooter’s airboat ride through the Waccamaw Wildlife Refuge.  This was Alexis’s first air boat ride. We saw a good many gators, birds, and swamp-things. Upon returning, we bought a groupon to check out the “BrookGreen Gardens”  This was neat sculpture garden and just so happen to be the 1st in the United States.  The sculptures were fascinating and horticulture was very fancy. The garden even boasted its own zoo, which just so happened to have a large lego exhibit.

By the time we finished seeing all the animals, we were completely drained and that made for a fun winding trip back into Charlotte.
