Rocky Face Recreational Park
Rumbling Bald was a place that we told me I have to visit while I am in NC. The cliffs are south facing so the time to climb there is in the winter, after the poison ivy dies, but before the place turns into a oven.
The bald is host to some fine granite cracks and slab. The only area I have climbed there is the classic and beginner area of the Cereal Buttress. The place has a dense collection of 4 star cracks. I was able to onsight all of them.
- Fruit Loops (5.7, 2 pitch) – Low angle crack and chimney
- Granola (5.8,2 pitch) – hard deckable opening moves, and rope drag top
- Whiskey for Breakfast (5.10b) – TR only, it needs really thin gear.
- Frosted Flake (5.9) – big honking flake
- Shredded Wheat (5.11-) – steep Finger crack that gets really thin.
Also, went to a new place that opened up in a old quarry in the month of December, Rocky Face Recreational Area. This place could be a fun little crag, but I fear it will only be able to be climbed in the cool and cold months. The place is in its infancy and will need to clean up, but it’s good to see a sport park in NC.
Hey! Great pics. I’m actually going out to the rumbling bald to climb this March. It’ll be my first time outside. Could you let me know the area and route name for the climb in this pic?

Thanks!!!!
Hey Rusty, Thanks for reading the blog hopes it helps ya out. The area is the main vertical near the middle of the cliff line.
It really noticeable once you get there. There is a picnic table right in front of it. The route in this picture I think is called “double roof ballet”.
