Linville Gorge: Table Rock Hiking

1Linville Gorge from Table Rock

Weekend trip up to Linville Gorge started off pretty odd. It was all because I happened to pick not the best place to camp for the night.

I happened to choose on location and facility needs to camp at Steele Family Campground. We’ll I guess I should have looked it up more, as this was a mecca for RV family campers. I have never seen so many RV’s camped at one spot. The campground was very nice, but tent campers was not their target market group and even less so us being minimal backpacking campers. Over a 100 Rv’s lined the campgrounds packed into all spots. Some RV’s seemed like they would never be moved again by having fully permanent decks attached to them.

In the morning, we packed up and go out there before the generators started to fire up. We took the long dirt road up to Table Rock. We hike the standard trail to the top and grab some pictures. It was a good morning, nice sunshine and a cool breeze when you got up and out of the scrub brush. Alexis only found 2 blueberries to eat. Afterwards we headed down, and went to view the actual Linville Falls. This was a extreme popular tourist hike. We got caught in to bottleneck on the trail a couple times. Leaving the rain started to pour, we scurried around and eventually made it to the car.

Leaving we passed Linville Winery, and stop for a sample. We did their tasting, and only 2 wines stuck out to me. Brandy age Cherry wine and their Blueberry Wine. We listened to their live music (2 guys on guitars, one of them was a steel guitar) and he jump start a ladies car. We didn’t quite fit in with a sweaty and dirty hiking clothing, but everyone was still very nice.

Heading back we found out where to camp at Table Rock. This camping with us better. Nested in a clearing on the ridge line, we made a real campsite and eat dinner. Alexis ended up in a coma and slept for 15 hrs. Later in the morning, we hike down the trail through the chimneys. Having enough hiking we headed back, stopping in Morganton. Here we found a seed and feed store that had trapped a Raccoon that was eating their best dog food. I also found a bunch of Jack Daniels Barrels for sale.
