Peak Season
I visited Alexis for her birthday at the end of September. We went west to the Pisgah forest area in search of adventure.
We left Charlotte in a light rain of Saturday and made it steadily to the town of Blowing Rock. It end up being a complete white out while we were there. We stop to view “the rock” but didn’t really realize we were standing on it and under it. The town it’s self was a rich up-scale area . You tell lots of people had second homes there.
We then drove below the Blue Ridge Parkway and saw the Linn Cove viaduct. I ended up spraining my ankle walking around and had to hobble back to car. With our plans now dashed, we continued directly to Banner Elk (a town with no elk). We checked in to the Azalea Inn and went to the winery up the road. The wines were good (I know nothing about wine) and we waited out the rains some more. For dinner were went to a Italian place in town. The food was good, but we were below the mean age by 30 some years. By now, on pain med and wine, we head back early to play Skipbo and pass out.
In the morning, we had an okay breakfast below on of the ski resorts called Sugar Mountain. We then tried to check out Grandfather Mountain but they wanted $18 a person to see it. So we said screw that and drove along the parkway. The leaves were changing and the rain had cleared so we took our time and wound back to Charlotte.
