Niagara Falls and Wine Country

This New Year’s, Alexis and I continued the theme of going to the a Northeastern Cold Rusting Old Steel Town, Buffalo NY and Niagara Falls.    We left the land of PA and took off north on the Interstate through Eric and into the Niagara area.    We made our initial stop at the US side of the Falls.

Everything of under construction and pretty much all the close up views and walk were blocked off.   Things were gray, muddy and generally depressed looking.  1 good thing was that we were able to get away with not paying for any parking.  We quickly decided that the US side was not the place to be if you want to be a tourist at Niagara.  (Previously, I had only been a Fisherman at Niagara, with my family fishing trip to catch salmon at the bottom of the gorge with my dad and brother.)

We stopped in for lunch at brewery, and were thoroughly confused when we were introduce to Canada’s rules of using a debit card. They bring the machine to you! We drove down the river gorge on the Canada side, viewing the whirlpool and our old fishing spot on the American side of the banks.

We continued further down until we got to the Niagara on the lakes area.  It was a quaint town that was being fueled by the incredible wine industry. We even got to see Wayne Gretzky’s wine offerings.   We then decided to go visit some actual winery and taste their samples.  The area is known for their ice wine, and every winery had some to offer.  We stopped at 3 wineries, and one of them was become the 1st winery to can wine.

We head back into the falls area, checked into our Air BnB and walked to the falls.  We took pictures of the night and explore the different tourist traps of the area.  By the end of the night, we were ready to sleep, but missed our time-frame to use the massive hot-tub at the BnB.

In the morning, the host made use some awesome breakfast in an old world Victorian dining room. We continued the nice quiet morning and slowly made our way back across the border.  We performed a quick stop and detour to grab the original Buffalo Wings in Buffalo, NY before we made our way to PSU for New Years.
