Rumbling Bald: Way Out Left

Only this drawing exists of the trip

I met Matt, Jason, and surprise guest “Bob” at Rumbling Bald on a Saturday morning. I had to do the AM wake-up and drive to make sure I got a spot at the parking lot. We met around 9ish and had a game plan to check out some new sections in the guide book.

One’s best intentions usually don’t happen when you head to a place you haven’t been before. We were aiming for “tail of the cat” and “wall of solitude”, but while hiking the approach trail I noticed we must have missed the bushwhack trail up the gully.  We changed plans and decided to head to the Hanging Chain wall.

Well we miss the cut off trial for it too. So eventually we wander up the steep and leafy hillside till we got to the Left Field entrance (there is no “real” trail to this place).  We mostly just wanders up and over till we got to some openings that looked like a slope to the rocks.

Once we got our bearings, Bob and I set up a 5.7 intro pitch to some more climbing. Matt and Jason head out to do some 5.10 trad line out to the left of us. I almost got the onsite of the 5.12 tech-fest Blood Root, but I couldn’t figure out the movement out of the small cathedral. We TR’s a couple other one up there as well. All were really good fun.

During our climb Matt and Jason, didn’t seem to be having to much fun. They hit some loose rock and water. But when the eventually got down and said it was fun, I know they were trying to sucker us in to climb it too.

Bob and I moved over to Hanging Chain wall and went up the easier of the Spry Climbs. The Hard spry climb looks like a nice intense route for another day. I lost a locker to the anchors, but gained a nut-tool at the base.

We sauntered our way back to the parking lot and ate pizza on the shore of lake lure.
